Born in Buenos Aires, Argentinian mezzosoprano Guadalupe Barrientos studied at the Art Institute of the Teatro de Colón as well as at La Plata Opera Studio and undertook vocal training with Carlos Alvarez, Julia Varady and Barbara Frittoli.
Chosen by the Argentinian musical critics association as “Argentinian Singer of the Year” among Barrientos’ recent and current engagements are the semi-scenic version of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 Resurrection with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit in co-production with the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Fenena (Nabucco), Fricka (Rheingold) and Giulietta (Contes d´Hoffman) at Teatro Colón Buenos Aires and the title role in Carmen at the Slovenian National Opera as well as the Ljubljana Festival.
Her vast repertoire includes some of the most demanding roles in the verismo repertoire, highlights have been Amneris (Aida)at Bunkamura Orchard Hall Tokyo, Teatro Municiple de Santiago and Teatro Colon, Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera) at Teatro Municipal Rio de Janeiro, Carmen at Royal Opera of Muscat, Adalgisa (Norma) at Teatro Colon, Zia and Zitta (Il Trittico) at Slovenian National Opera as well as Santuzza (Cavalleria Rusticana), Principessa di Bouillon (Adriana Lecouvreur), Dalila (Samson and Dalila), Mère (Dialogues des Carmelites), Preziosilla (Forza del destino), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Meg (Falstaff), Emilia (Otello) and Sphinx (Oedipe).
On the concert platform her repertoire includes Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle & Stabat Mater; Mozart’s Requiem and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 performed under the musical directions of Massimo Zanetti, Renato Palumbo, Stefan Lano, Luka Borowicz, Ira Levin and Evelino Pido.
Guadalupe Barrientos was finalist at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World edition of 2019, competed at Operalia and Neue Stimmen and participated in Dolora Zajick ́s Institute for Young Dramatic Voices in 2021.
